Emergency dentist in Denton: help when you’re in pain

At Thornley Park Dental on Manchester Road in Denton, we offer same-day emergency appointments to relieve pain, protect the tooth and explain your options clearly, and you don’t need to be an existing patient. Call early in the day to give us the best chance of seeing you that day.

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have swelling that is spreading to your eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won’t stop, or a serious injury to the head or face.

What counts as a dental emergency?

• Severe or throbbing toothache
• A knocked-out, loose, chipped or cracked tooth
• Swelling in the gum, face or jaw, or a suspected abscess
• A lost filling or crown that is causing pain or has left a sharp edge
• Bleeding or pain that continues after an extraction
• Dental pain after an accident or injury

What to do before your appointment

• Toothache: rinse with warm water, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and take pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen if it’s suitable for you, following the packet instructions. Don’t place aspirin directly on the gum.
• Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it’s clean and you can, gently put it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk and see us straight away, as the chances of saving it are highest within the first hour. Don’t try to reinsert a baby tooth.
• Chipped or broken tooth: rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any fragment in milk or a damp cloth, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax.
• Lost filling or crown: keep the crown safe and avoid chewing on that side. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can cover the gap. Please don’t use superglue.
• Swelling or abscess: rinse with warm salt water and call us. Swelling can spread quickly, so don’t wait.
• Bleeding after an extraction: press a clean gauze or cloth firmly on the area for about 20 minutes.

How we treat dental emergencies

We start by finding out what’s wrong, asking about your pain and, where needed, taking an X-ray. Our priority is to relieve your pain and stabilise the problem first, then treat it properly. Depending on the cause, that may mean:

• A white filling to repair a broken or decayed tooth
• Root canal treatment to remove an infected nerve
• A dental crown to protect a heavily damaged tooth
• A tooth extraction when a tooth can’t be saved

We explain your options and the cost before we go ahead, so you stay in control of your treatment.

How much does an emergency appointment cost?

From our fee guide:

• Emergency appointment (plus the cost of any treatment): £85
• Emergency pulp removal for an infected tooth (extirpation): £130
• X-rays (each): £15
